FOOTMAD will kick off its 2011-2012 concert season with a very special concert honoring Elkins, West Virginia, folklorists and musicians Michael and Carrie Kline.

The Klines will perform, as well as receive FOOTMAD’s FOOTbridge Award for their years of work to preserve traditional Appalachian music and stories.

Also performing in honor of the Klines are their longtime friends and fellow musicians Sam and Joe Herrmann, David Norris, and John Lilly.

Each year, FOOTMAD seeks to honor an outstanding musician (or musicians) for his or her work to preserve traditional Appalachian music.

For 2011-2012, the award goes to Michael and Carrie Kline. From gathering countless oral histories of the people of West Virginia and other parts of Appalachia, to collecting and performing traditional coal-mining songs, to gathering and recording the local songs of Hampshire County for its 250 th anniversary celebration, the Klineshave devoted their careers to preserving the music and culture of the region.

Also contributing their talents to this musical event are the husband-and-wife musical duo of Sam and Joe Herrmann. The Herrmanns, residents of Paw Paw, West Virginia, are accomplished string band musicians who, in the 1970s, played at festivals, colleges, campgrounds, and other establishments up and down the East Coast. During their musical career together, they joined forces with other musicians to form The Critton Hollow Stringband. Joe Herrmann is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who is well-known in traditional music circles for his singing, as well as banjo, acoustic guitar, and fiddle playing. He has toured internationally and recorded eight albums, including Gather’round, produced in 2009.

Songwriter and musician David Norris remembers waking early in the morning and singing his dreams to his twin brother. All his life this native of Chaptico on the western shore of St. Mary’s County, Maryland, has been writing songs that reflect the heritage of his home region. Today his tunes are performed and recorded by top artists such as Blue Highway, The Seldom Scene, IIIrd Tyme Out, Jim Hurst, and Gary Ferguson and Sally Love. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, in 1996, Norris won Nashville’s Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at Merlefest in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, for his song “Timberline.”

Angie Richardson is a talented singer and piano player from the Kanawha Valley’s rich African American gospel music tradition. She has appeared at the Vandalia Gathering and at church events and gospel music festivals in recent years. She performs a variety of sacred and secular material.

John Lilly, Charleston-based songwriter and editor of Goldenseal magazine, will act as emcee for this special event.
