Callers

Gaye Fifer
from Charlottesville , VA has been a caller and teacher at almost every dance weekend in the eastern US. She delights dancers with her clear walk-throughs and smooth-flowing contras. Gaye and partner Wayne Albright also teach enchanting waltz workshops. With their engaging and entertaining style, they teach moves to really get dancers connecting with each other and the music.

Shawn Brenneman
Shawn left her full time job at Radford University to pursue her passions – contra dancing, calling for contra dances, and playing for dances with her contra dance band, House Red. Now that she’s living her dream, Shawn not only calls regularly for dances in her home state of Virginia, but in NC, SC, GA, PA, IN, ME, MA, CA, WA, and CO as well. She enjoys introducing contra dancing to newcomers, as well as choosing varied, interesting, and challenging material that provides an evening of fun for everyone.

Bands

The Figments
incorporate an eclectic mix of styles into their inspired performances of music for dancing or listening. Whether grooving on an Old-time, Irish or French Canadian fiddle tune, trading daring improvisations on a gypsy jazz or swing number, or exploring the nuances of a graceful waltz or elegant English country dance tune, this trio of versatile musicians makes dynamic, spontaneous and electrifying music. The Figments are: Anna Patton (clarinet), Ethan Hazzard-Watkins (fiddle), Owen Morrison (guitar, feet)

The Contrarians
are a four-piece contradance band, the Contrarians of West Virginia play contradance and square dance music on fiddles, guitar, mandolin, piano, tenor banjo, upright bass, and a bluesy trumpet. A Contrarians event delivers dazzling melody - including some great original tunes - along with a solid yet imaginative approach to rhythm. The Contrarians are comfortable in a variety of styles and traditions: Celtic, New England, swing, and of course, old-time (Appalachian). They also write original material. With rhythmic variety, occasional glimpses of ethnic music, and unique improvisations, dancers let loose and never lose interest in the music.

Dancer comment from a 2009 contra dance: “I had the opportunity to experienced one of Harriette's meals at a contradance earlier this year. It was amazing what she was able to do with a small budget. The spread layed out over three long tables and every dish was a delight to see (the presentation was half of the enjoyment) and of course, every dish was a pleasure to taste . There was something for everyone to enjoy! Thanks Harriette!” - Jeff

Adventure tours

Fayette County, West Virginia has some fantastic outdoor recreation opportunities, hiking, biking, rafting, rock climbing, and more. If you will be participating in a pro-guided (paid) activity—such as whitewater rafting—contact the outfitter and book your trip. The procedure is explained on the Whirl web site.

A new adventure has been added to the area: The TreeTops Canopy Tour opened May 1st with a world class full canopy tour program designed by international leader Bonsai Designs. The course is located at a newly expanded adventure resort: home to Class VI-Mountain River and Rivermen.  This half day adventure includes 10 Ziplines, 5 Sky Bridges, 1 Rappel, and 3 Short Hikes. Spend 3 1/2 hours in the old growth hemlock and hardwoods forest of pristine Mill Creek Canyon, immediately adjacent to the awe-inspiring New River Gorge. The longest zip is 730 feet and reaches speeds of about 35 mph.

The Whirl has obtained a group rate for the Canopy Tour, $95 per person. This is a savings of $20 from the regular rate. We must assemble groups of 6 or 8 to get the group rate. Tours book to capacity, so reserve by 03/30. See information and a video at www.NewRiverGorgeCanopyTour.com.

If you are interested in the canopy tour, please let us know by return e-mail so that we can estimate possible participation in this activity. If we have enough responses for a group tour, we will request setup groups with the outfitter. For group rates, we have to send advance money to the outfitter. The outfitter does not refund cancellations. Therefore we can not give refunds – unless someone takes your place – if you cancel.
