Whirl 2012 Callers

Gaye Fifer
from Charlottesville , VA has been a caller and teacher at almost every dance weekend in the eastern US. She delights dancers with her clear walk-throughs and smooth-flowing contras. Gaye and partner Wayne Albright also teach enchanting waltz workshops. With their engaging and entertaining style, they teach moves to really get dancers connecting with each other and the music.

Shawn Brenneman
Shawn left her full time job at Radford University to pursue her passions – contra dancing, calling for contra dances, and playing for dances with her contra dance band, House Red. Now that she’s living her dream, Shawn not only calls regularly for dances in her home state of Virginia, but in NC, SC, GA, PA, IN, ME, MA, CA, WA, and CO as well. She enjoys introducing contra dancing to newcomers, as well as choosing varied, interesting, and challenging material that provides an evening of fun for everyone.

Whirl 2012 Bands

The Avant Gardeners
The Avant Gardeners are fiddler and vocalist Laura Light, George Paul on piano and accordion, Dave Wiesler on keyboards, guitar and mandolin and Jubal Creech on percussion.  Frequent stand ins for stay at home dad Dave Wiesler are Al White of Berea, KY (The Berea Castoffs) and Dave Bartley of Seattle (KGB). The tunes are eclectic, original and rootsy - American hybrid variety.

The deep grooves of the band's mixture of traditional and composed tunes have contributed to the delirium of dancers at countless dances and concerts from coast to coast. Their range of performing styles from traditional swing, Celtic and old time and their facile improvisation on fiddle, piano, accordion, guitar, mandolin, and percussion have given this group their reputation as one of the premier contra and swing dance bands in the country.

The Contrarians
are a four-piece contradance band, the Contrarians of West Virginia play contradance and square dance music on fiddles, guitar, mandolin, piano, tenor banjo, upright bass, and a bluesy trumpet. A Contrarians event delivers dazzling melody - including some great original tunes - along with a solid yet imaginative approach to rhythm. The Contrarians are comfortable in a variety of styles and traditions: Celtic, New England, swing, and of course, old-time (Appalachian). They also write original material. With rhythmic variety, occasional glimpses of ethnic music, and unique improvisations, dancers let loose and never lose interest in the music.

Dancer comment from a 2009 contra dance: “I had the opportunity to experienced one of Harriette's meals at a contradance earlier this year. It was amazing what she was able to do with a small budget. The spread layed out over three long tables and every dish was a delight to see (the presentation was half of the enjoyment) and of course, every dish was a pleasure to taste . There was something for everyone to enjoy! Thanks Harriette!” - Jeff
